This is a glossary of terms and abbreviations used in Star Frontiers.

A[]

Aircar — A vectored thrust vehicle that is capable of vertical take-off and landing, and flies like a jet.

Albedo(Latin "whiteness") A term used to describe the reflective properties of an object. In Star Frontiers, the term is used to describe anti-laser defensive screens and armor.

Anti-Shock Implant — A cybernetic implant that prevents the wearer central-nervus system form becoming overwhelmed by stun-type attacks.

Agro (Ag) — An abbreviation for "agriculture."

B[]

Battle Rage — A racial characteristic of Yazirians. The battle rage is inducen in order to make the Yazirian a more capable hand-to-hand combatant.

Blaster — A common name for a laser pistol.

C[]

Cadre — A trade union or association; a name given to the hypothetical organizational system of the Sathar.

Clip — An non-reloadable ammunition container or powerpack for a weapon. A clip fits directly into the weapon. Each type of weapon has its own clip. Contrast with magazines, which may be reloaded.

Combat Robot — A class of robot built for military roles; often commanded by Warbots.

Computer — Large electronic and mechanical systems capable of calculations, information storage and the management of other systems.

Computer Operator/Programmer — An individual qualified to work with, and repair computers and computer systems.

Credit (Cr) — The basic unit of currency in the Frontier setting.

Cybernetic Robot (Cybot) — A class of robot built with mechanical and organic parts, capable of preforming a wide range of roles.

D[]

Defensive Suits — Clothing that can protect the wearer from specific types of damage.

Demolitions Expert — An individual qualified to work with the manufacture, use, placement, and deactivation of explosives.

Disruptor (Sonic) — A rifle-size sonic weapon.

Doze Grenade — A small container that releases a cloud of fast-acting knockout gas. A person affected by a doze grenade will be unconscious for up to one hour.

Dralasites — One of the four space-faring races in Star Frontiers setting. Dralasites are blobish creatures that can change their shape. On average, they are stronger than humans, but also slower. They love philosophy, debates, and weird humor.

Envirokit — A standard equipment set with three types of environmental scanners: Biological, geological, and gas/vapors.

Environmentalist — An individual qualified in the environmental sciences and in wilderness survival.

Explorer — A type of all-terrain wheeled vehicle.

Exoskeleton — A powered exoskeleton is a wearable, powered mechanical frame that is that enhances the wearer's strength.

F[]

Flight, The — The space-faring military arm of the Rim Coalition.

Freeze Fields — An emergency medical device that is used to stabilize a critically injured person, so they can be taken for appropriate medical treatment at a hospital.

Frag — Term used to describe "fragmentation". Fragmentation describes the separation of something into pieces. In Star Frontiers, the term is used to describe any type of explosive device designed to launch fragments of material at high speed with the intent of causing damage; these fragments are commonly (if inaccurately) referred to as "shrapnel".

Frontier/Frontier Sector, The — The region of space and star systems therein where Dralasites, Humans, Vrusk, and Yazirians met. This region contains many new colonies and unexplored worlds.

G[]

Gauss — (pronounced "gowss"; rhymes with "house") Gauss is a term used to describe the strength of a magnetic field, also known as "magnetic flux density" or "magnetic induction". In Star Frontiers, Gauss is used to describe electric shock weapons and the defensive measures used to counter said weapons.

Glijet — A single-user rocket pack with collapsible wings for short-range transportation and scouting.

Gorlian — A native of Gruna Garu.

Gyrojet Weapons — A type of long-range firearm that fires small self-propelled rockets instead of ordinary bullets.

H[]

Heavy Duty Robots — A class of large [[Robots|robot] generally used for heavy labor.

Hologram (Holo) — A realistic 3-dimensional picture that is created with projectors, much like a modern movie.

Homeworld — 1. The planet a character was born on. 2. The planet of origin of a race.

Hypnotism — A racial ability of the Sathar to control the minds of other races.

Hypno-Training — A system of teaching that involves hypnotism, memorization and the use of drugs that improve the mind's ability to learn.

Humans — One of the four space-faring races in Star Frontiers setting. They are similar, but not identical, to the humans of Earth, but originated on a different planet.

I[]

Inertia — A term used to describe the resistance of any physical object to any change in its state of motion (this includes changes to its speed, direction or state of rest). It is the tendency of objects to keep moving in a straight line at constant velocity. In Star Frontiers, the term is used to describe defensive screens and armor that reduce the kinetic energy of a high-velocity physical impact, such as that caused by a crash, a fall, or physical attacks like those from explosives, bullets, and gyrojet rockets.

Infra-Red Goggles - Eyewear that allows a character to see even in total darkness by seeing heat.

Jetcopter — A three-passenger helicopter with jet-engines.

K[]

Kits — An assortment of related items commonly packaged into a wearable container, like a backpack or utility belt.

Kaboomite — Another name for Tornadium D-19 plastic explosives.

Jump/Jumping — A term used to describe transit through the Void, effectively crossing vast distances at superluminal (faster-than-light) speed.

L[]

Laser Weapons — A type of firearm that fire pulses of focused light that are so intense they can vaporize holes in solid matter.

M[]

Magnigoggles — A set of binoculars that is worn as goggles.

Martial Artist — An individual trained and qualified in unarmed hand-to-hand combat.

Maintenance Robots — A category of robot designed and built for maintenance and housekeeping labor.

Medic — An individual trained and qualified in the medical field.

Monorail — A mass transit system that uses six-passenger cars riding a one-rail track.

Needler Weapons — A type of short-range firearm that magnetically fires a cluster of small anesthetic-delivering or barbed needles.

Nightgoggles - Eyewear that allows characters to see in low-light conditions by gathering ambient light and amplifying it.

O[]

Orbital Shuttle (Orbiter) — A category of spacecraft designed for travel between a planetary surface and orbit, and vice-versa.

P[]

Pan-Galactic Corporation (PGC) — The oldest and largest interstellar company. PGC is one of the most powerful organizations in the Frontier.

Pan-Galactic (language) — Language created and developed by the Pan-Galactic Corporation in the early days of the Frontier to facilitate communication between the four major races (Dralasites, Humans, Vrusk, and Yazirians).

Parabattery — Active-matrix power storage devices commonly used to power computers, robots and vehicles.

Pedestrian Walkways — Small bridges built across roads and between buildings to make traveling on foot in the city easier and safer.

Polyvox/Poly-vox(Latin: "multi-voice") A portable translating device worn around the neck.

Psycho-Sociologist — An individual trained and qualified in Psychology and Sociology.

Rim, The — A region of space just beyond the Frontier, loosely joined by the Rim Coalition.

Rim Coalition, The — The interplanetary alliance of the worlds of the Rim sector.

Risk Jumping — Performing a Void Jump without sufficient calculations.

Roboticist — An individual skilled and qualified in the repair, programming, maintenance, and modification of Robots.

S[]

Sathar — A race of aggressive, worm-like creatures that have attacked and destroyed Frontier outposts and colonies. Very little is known about them because no Sathar has ever been captured alive.

Sathar Attack Monster — Creatures altered by the Sathar to be aggressive attack animals.

A category of genetically and/or cybernetically modified creatures bred and/or created by the Sathar as living bioweapons.

Scope — Any of a variety of optical or electronic devices mounted on ranged weapons in order to increase their capabilities.

Security Robots — A category of robot designed, built, and programmed for guard and police duty.

Service Robots — A category of robot designed, built, and programmed to interact with living beings for domestic and commercial roles.

Sharpshooter — An individual trained and qualified in the use of projectile weapons.

Shop, The — Spacer term for a spaceship drydock.

Skimmer — A five-passenger vehicle that floats on a cushion of air generated by powerful fans.

Sliders/People-movers — Moving walkways for pedestrians.

Sleeper — Spacer term for a passenger travelling in a Storage Class Suspended Animation Unit.

"Smoking the jump" — A spacer term for making an jump without sufficient preparation; Risk Jumping.

Sonic — Term meaning 'of or relating to sound, sound waves, or the speed of sound'. In Star Frontiers, it specifically refers to sonic weapons and screens.

Spacer — An individual who lives and works in space.

Spray Hypo — Medical instrument used to dispense drugs transdermally (through the skin). The spray hypo is silent, efficient, and hygenic.

Space Marine — A solider who operates in space. An individual trained and qualified to operate ranged energy weapons.

Standard Energy Units (SEU) — A unit of electrical energy. Approximately equivalent to 1,000 joules (1 kj). SEU are produced by power generators and stored in capacitor-based, or active-matrix packs and batteries.

Star Law, Star Law Rangers — The law enforcement branch of the UPF. It concentrates on finding Sathar agents, but also fights space piracy and other forms of interstellar crime.

Starship — A spaceship capable of superluminal (faster-that-light) travel. Specifically, a spaceship capable of reaching Void velocity (approximately 1% speed of light).

Star Soldier — A solider who operates in space. An individual trained and qualified to operate Gyrojet Weapons.

Staydose — A drug that will put a character in stasis for 24 hours and keep him or her alive after his or her Stamina has been reduced to zero or less.

Stimdose — A drug that can be used either to restore 10 Stamina points to a wounded character or to wake up a character who has been knocked unconscious by wounds, doze gas, or other knockout drugs/effects.

Stunner — A pistol-sized non-lethal sonic weapon.

Super-Sonic Transport (SST) — Large jet-powered aircraft capable of flying at super-sonic speeds through a planet's atmosphere. SSTs are incapable of leaving the atmosphere to reach orbit.

System ship — A spaceship limited to a single star system.

T[]

Technician (Tech) — An individual trained and qualified in the operation, maintenance, and repair of machinery.

Trivid — Three-dimensional (holographic) television.

U[]

United Planetary Federation (UPF) — A loose alliance formed between many planetary governments after the first Sathar attacks. The UPF is not an an interstellar government; it is a defense organization devoted to protecting member planets from Sathar takeover or destruction, through its military branch, Spacefleet and its law enforcement branch, Star Law.

V[]

Vrusk — One of the four space-faring races in Star Frontiers setting. Vrusk resemble large insects, and sometimes are called "bugs" by the other races. Their society is organized around large companies. They love beauty and order. Vrusk are quicker than humans, but not as strong.

Void, The — Hyper-dimensional region that makes faster-than-light travel possible. The Void can be reached by accelerating to 1% the speed of light (2,997,925 m/s, or 10,792,530 kph, or 6,706,167 mph), known as Void Velocity or Void Speed.

W[]

Warbot — A category of artificially-intelligent war machines capable of commanding Combat Robots.

Weaponeer — An individual trained and qualified in the use and operation of close-quarters melee weapons.

Y[]

Yazirians — One of the four space-faring races in Star Frontiers setting. Yazirians are tall humanoids with manes, nicknamed "monkeys" by the other races. They are generally smarter and quicker than the other races, but are not as strong. Other races consider them aggressive and pushy.

Z[]

Zapgun — Slang term for an Electrostunner. Named thus due to the sound the weapon makes when discharging.

Advertisement
